Kenya set to start oil production
Kenya is expected to start producing oil in three and half years’ time, Tullow Oil has disclosed. According to Tullow Oil 2015 half-year report released yesterday, production of oil from its Turkana fields is expected by 2020 and the decision for the crude oil pipeline route that will link the Coast and the oil field in northern Kenya is almost complete.
Two possible routes have been proposed from the Turkana well, one running through northern Kenya to the Coast up to the proposed Lamu port and the second follows the route of the existing pipeline up to the port of Mombasa.
But Energy ministry Principal Secretary Joseph Njoroge said the decision would be made once the contractor is through with a thorough analysis of the two routes. “Construction of the pipeline may be completed by about 2018 or 2019 ,” he said.
Tullow Oil has also set aside Sh23 billion for construction Kenya-Uganda pipeline, whose appraisal is almost complete. “The two countries are working together towards sharing an oil exportation pipeline,” the report said.
According to the report, the firm’s activities primarily focused on the appraisal of the South Lokichar basin to test the commercial viability of previous discoveries and gain important reservoir data for the field development plans.
